There’s a certain satisfaction you get when you reach for the bottled water at your local grocery store. Perhaps you pat yourself on the back for not grabbing the soda, or maybe you feel slight satisfaction in the fact that you are, at that moment, making a ‘healthy’ choice. You unscrew the cap, take that first big gulp, and ahhh… the feel good sensation of that cool hydration reaffirms the healthy choice you just made.
But wait. How healthy is that water you’re drinking? Unlike any other product where we check ingredients or perhaps question where it’s from or who makes it, water seems to be a universal ‘good’ choice. Water is water, right? Well, not quite. All water is not created equal. The reality is, the water you are drinking is more than likely acidic with unbalanced pH levels, full of harmful chemicals, pollutants and additives, making that bottled water more of a mystery than you realize. This mystery, or secret rather, is something that water bottle manufacturers have no intention on filling you in on. It should be no surprise that it’s in their best interest to keep you in the dark about what you are really drinking, keeping you from the truth, and in the process, fooling you into thinking you are making a healthful decision regarding the most important substance you put into your body. Call it deception or call it misleading, either way, it’s a truth you should be made aware of for the sake of your future health.
So what are you drinking when you take that big sip of bottled water? Well, for one, you are drinking a host of different chemicals and minerals that cause the water you drink (both tap & bottled water), to be more acidic than pure H2O. These additives are put into bottled water for an array of different reasons, ranging from chemicals to make the water taste better, to minerals that water companies feel enhance the look, taste, or nutritional value of the water. Additionally, chemicals and pollutants do not get fully processed out of your water during the filtration process. Bottled water, in fact, is one of the few things we put into our bodies that has little regulation by the FDA. The tricky thing about these chemicals and minerals is the fact that nowhere on your water bottle label will these pollutants and additives be mentioned. You are ingesting chemicals that you don’t even know about. Furthermore, you are taking in water that is acidic, which depletes hydration levels. Pretty counterproductive, right? Here you are drinking water to hydrate yourself, when that very hydration is DEHYRDRATING?! This is exactly what the water bottle manufacturers don’t want you to know.
Here are some disturbing facts:
- A recent study claims that in 43 of the 43 states in which tap water tests were performed, results showed much higher levels of contaminants than acceptable standards.
- Most of the water you drink from a plastic water bottle has even fewer requirements for testing than our tap water! The companies simply state the source of the water as a natural spring or mountain stream, and we believe that water is pure.
- More than half of all bottled water is derived from municipal water, not springs of pure water, which is what water bottle companies would have you believe.
- Water purification processes remove everything from bottled water, not just some pollutants, leaving the water void of any nutrients and benefits that are naturally in pure water.
- Purified water is stored and sold in a plastic bottle, which may leach contaminants into your drink. The production of bottled water required approximately 1 million tons of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics in 2006. PET’s are petroleum-derived plastics that have been suspected of leaching Obesogens (hormone-disrupting chemicals) into the water.
- The plastics that water bottles are made up of are one of the main sources of Obesogens in our environment, which are chemical compounds that alter the way our bodies process fat, slowing our metabolism and contributing to obesity. Plastics are now being found to be a main contributor of obesity in the U.S. and abroad.
Aside from the immediate impact to your health, bottled water also poses a massive threat to our environment. According to the Pacific Institute: “ Based on the quantity of U.S. bottled water sales reported by the Beverage Manufacturers Corporation for 2005, 38 billion plastic bottles were sold in the U.S. which used 900,000 tons of plastic, requiring 1.7 million barrels of oil, to make the #2 PETE bottles typically used for commercially bottled water. The production of the plastic water bottles created 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.”
According to NBC News, the number of water bottles consumed by the U.S., if laid end-to-end, could encircle the Earth 150 times each year. Less than 1/4th of these bottles are recycled, according to the Container Recycling Institute. “Most water bottles end up in the landfill, where the plastic may decompose after 1,000 years.” With unimaginably large amounts of plastic debris finding its way into our oceans and environment, every corner of our planet it being affected by the use of plastics – and bottled water is one of the largest plastic producing industries that we buy into, year after year.
Drinking bottled water can be a dangerous choice. Not only is it full of unknown contaminants and additives, it is incredibly bad for the environment and the future of our planet. We have ultimately been tricked into believing that bottled water is the most health conscious decision we can make, but we have been highly misinformed.
The truth is that we need our water to be our source of nutrient rich hydration. Balanced, clean water, free of chemicals and pollutants is what our bodies need. Luckily, the best and healthiest way to drink water can be done right from your own tap, with an ionizing alkaline filter. Drinking pure and balanced alkaline water is the most healthful decision you can make. Alkaline water is free of impurities, chemicals and residues that are present in both bottled and regular tap water. With balanced pH levels, alkaline water hydrates as it is supposed to – purely and without additives. Free from the acidic compounds that are found in bottled water, alkaline water reverses the damage that a modern diet has on your body and the acid producing lifestyles that we lead.
While the realities of bottled water are shocking and disturbing, we have the ability to make the choice not to submit our bodies to the harsh chemicals and pollutants found in bottled water today. So take a stand for the sake of your health, and take a stand against the water bottle companies that misinform you about what is in the water you drink. Your body and the planet deserve better – drink pure alkaline water and you will make a positive change in more ways than one.
